Dropped Bowl with Scattered Slices and Peels by Claes Oldenburg and Cooosje van Bruggen

111 NW 1st Street, Miami, FL 33128

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen made huge sculptures of everyday things, like spoons, binoculars, and clothespins from 1976 until van Bruggen died in 2009. Dropped Bowl with Scattered Slices and Peels was commissioned by the Metro-Dade County Art in Public Places program in September 1984, and the sculpture was installed in September 1989 and inaugurated in March 1990. Oldenburg and van Bruggen chose oranges for Miami because they are a symbol of Florida and the Orange Bowl stadium. The sculpture also has water jets that look like juice spilling out of the bowl. It’s a fun and playful way to celebrate the city’s energy and diversity.
